Ratings

Ratings

The BBFC would probably rate our thriller 12A. The BBFC’S Guidelines states that strong language is not acceptable in 12A films but more moderate language like ‘Oh My God’, which was used in the film, is allowed. Also 12A film are not to have strong scenes of violent nature, but are allowed to have moderate violence which is shown in our thriller one of the character gets run over by another character. The theme of our thriller is mature but is also suitable for younger views since it is not that dark of a film. The film is a thriller, which could shock the viewers, and menace could be permitted.

What have we learnt about technologies in our media work?

What have we learnt about technologies in our media work?

We learnt a lot about technology when filming, editing and evaluating our thriller. We used different types of technology to create our thriller these are:

Google
W
e used Google to help access different websites such as Pearl and Dean. We found this useful as we got lots of information

Youtube

We
used Youtube to get clips of different thrillers to help compare them to ours, also to get different ideas of what we can do when filming our thriller

Pages

We used pages to store our information on thrillers, this is so that we could look at our information if we wa
nted to change or add anything. This was very important when storing the data we have gathered.

Video camera

We used a video camera to film our thriller; it was simple using the video camera, as we didn’t have lots
of camera angles to film it from so we found it easier.

Camera
We used a camera to take pictures; this is because we have evidence of us working. Also we can take picture
s of the cast to show who is in the film and an idea of what the characters look like and expressions.

Tripod
We used a tripod to hold the video camera; this is so we would get steady footage rather than footage moving when it isn’t meant to. This means our overall thriller will be better.

Blogger
We used Blogger; this is also similar to Pages because we used it to store our information. We also used
to place all of our information together to put as a final project.

Garage band
We used garage band to create the music for our thriller, we used it because it helps us to make our thriller better as it will had tension and a sense of mystery. Garage band is difficult to use because we had to put all of the different instruments together.

Final cut pro
We used final cut pro to edit our thriller opening, this was the most important thing we used because editing was the main part of our work. Final cut pro was hard to use as we had to cut each bit and change them about to put our thriller in order.

Creative risks when filming

Creative risks

When filming our thriller, we had a risk we had to take. This was because we had to film Sandra getting run over. Even though we used a special technique so that Sandra wouldn’t get hurt. The technique we used was by not actually running her over, but to drive the car at a very slow speed and as the car hits Sandra it stops and then she falls onto the car. Even though Charlotte was meant to drive the car and hit Sandra, she didn’t as she has not got a full drivers licence, that’s why she was not seen driving the car. The driver of the car was Patrick Moran (Charlotte’s dad). We know that Patrick would be a good as he has a fully drivers licence and has been driving for over 30 years, so he has had lots of experience. Also when filming the car crash we use a quiet road which was small which many people don’t go down. This is because it would help reduce any harm.

Another risk when filming was the weather, when we filmed the car crash we wanted it to be a rainy day because It would add special effects to our thriller and make it seem more mysterious and gloomy. So we had to watch the weather so that we could film on a particular day.

Who is our audience likely to be?

Who would your audience be?

This is Reese Moran he is 18 and lives in the suburbs of Sidcup. He dresses casual, simple jeans and top. He enjoys playing Xbox and going out with his friends and using social networking sites. He enjoys watching football matches and watching films like the dark knight and all the saw series. He likes to eat takeaway. He enjoys listening to soundtracks of films.

I think our thriller would appeal to Reese since he is a typical male who likes things linked to our thriller e.g. he enjoys watching thrillers like Saw.

It has been proven that majority of people who watch thrillers are young males. Our thriller target audience are young, middle class males from the ages of 15-34. Below are comparisons of our thriller and two other famous thrillers Saw and Seven.

How are we going to attract our audience?

How are we going to attract our audience?

Our group attracted our audience in different ways. As we know that thrillers are more likely to attract males (as seen from the Pearl and Dean website) so therefore we know that thrillers should be based more on what prefer to watch. So this will include things such as, death, violence, cars etc. This is because men get a thrill from these particular scenes. So a way to attract our audience is to include something in which people will want to see. As men are the most popular type to watch thrillers we need to include things which men will watch, that’s why we thought of adding a car crash, this is because men watch things such a car crashes because it includes violence/ destruction so therefore lots of males will go to see it. So this means that we will be attracting our audiences, which is most likely to be males.

Pictures of cast

Profile: Charlotte Moran: Stephanie White Age: 34 Occupation: Secret agent

Description of Charlotte in her clothes Charlotte was wearing a black coat with tights; this is because she is a professional secret agent so she is required to dress smart for her job. We thought that making the character Stephanie would be a secret agent because it makes the thriller more mysterious as we do not know the exact job a secret agent does as they have to undercover. We dressed the character Stephanie in plain black clothes to show that the she is a serious about her job, but we also added a feminine side to her (we are going to film her applying her makeup) and also wearing a pink top underneath her coat. This shows that she also likes to do things outside of her work, but feels that work is more important

Profile: Jack Delaney: Michael White Age: 34 Occupation: Personal assistant

Description of Jack in his clothes As Jack is saying goodbye to his wife (Stephanie). We decided to make Michael with a less paid job; this is to show that Stephanie has more of the role within the house. This is because of her job, so we thought that him wearing casual clothes when they talk would be good, because his job hasn’t got as much authority so he starts later in the day, so he wears his casual clothes in the morning.

Profile: Sandra Idio: Jessica Music Age: 27 Occupation: unknown

Description of Sandra in her clothes We decided that Sandra should wear a grey jumper, blue jeans and grey boots. We thought that this would be good for her to wear when getting run over because she is meant to be a casual person, we thought that adding a jumper with a hood up this is because it makes the scene seem more mysterious and as Sandra seems casual for her clothes her jumper will change the situation as her face is blocked out besides when seeing her hit the car. We thought that her wearing grey would be good because it is a dull colour so therefore it makes it gloomier which creates tension in the scene.

Plot of our thriller

Pitch – Plot

Stephanie is M.I. 6 agent, she is going through her daily routine: putting on her make up, putting on her shoes, taking her coffee and saying goodbye to her husband Michael. When Stephanie is driving to work she accidentally hits a suspicious women crossing the road. Stephanie gets out of her car to help the women, but she strangely walks off like nothing happened. Stephanie gets back in her car and realises that her brief case has gone missing which has very important documents concerning the UK government. She then attempts to look for her suitcase on the road, she then notices the suspicious women again sitting on the other side of the road, a car drives by and the women disappears. She goes back to her office and tells her boss that the briefcase has gone missing and there is mayhem in the office. There is an investigation to find out who has got the case. The story shows Stephanie solving the mystery of the case and finding out that there is more to the documents than it seems and this leads to Stephanie making a serious choice if to stay in the M.I. 6.

We thought that these would be good to include for our opening credits because it shows the audience the different that are needed for our filming and that only a few people were used to created our thriller.

Films that influenced our thriller choice

Film influence

We had to main film influences within our thriller, these are “Premonition” and “I know what you did last summer”.

“Premonition” was influence to our film, because the film is about a woman who has a premonition that her husband has died. She lives days that her husband is dead and other days her husband is still living. This influenced us because Stephanie will be dreaming that she is going to run Jessica over, so it makes the film seem more suspicious, this links in with the film “Premonition” because they both dream of something bad happening and it comes true.

Here is the trailer of the film, to get an idea of how the film will link into our thriller because of her dreaming things of what is going to happen.

Another film that influenced are choice of thriller is “I know what you did last summer”, this influenced our choice of film because it is about a group of friends that run someone over, and then someone finds out and they get haunted by this person that knows, but they are confused to how they know because know one saw the car accident. This links into our film because Stephanie runs Jessica over and just gets up to continue walking and as nothing has happened, but Stephanie’s brief case goes missing and someone knows what’s inside of it, so someone can easily get her sacked, and lose everything she owns, this is similar to “I know what you did last summer” because something bad happens to them.

We thought that both of these films influenced us because they both have similar story lines as to what we wanted within our thriller. This is will help to make our thriller better because we will have two different types of thrillers in one.

Pearl and Dean evidence as to why we chose a thriller

From the Pearl and Dean website it shows that the majority of people that watch thrillers is male. An example that can be used to show this is the film Children of Men. From this it shows that 78% of the public were male and only 22% were female this shows that the majority of viewers were male. Also from this table it shows that the most common age group was between 25-34. From looking at other thrillers the most common age group was between 25-34 so this connects to other thrillers. From the table it shows that the most common type of social class that went to see Children of Men is 2006 was lower class. But from looking at other Thrillers it shows that the most common social class was middle working class.

This is evidence from the Pearl and Dean website from the film Children of Men.

It is showing the percentage of age groups, gender and social classes that went to see the film Children of Men.

We thought that doing a thriller would be a good idea; this is because we know that thrillers have been very successful, as seen from the Pearl and Dean Website with the film Saw making an estimate of £7,000,000. This is a lot of money to make on a film, another thriller which shows great success is Children of Men, and this made an estimate of £8,000,000. So we know as these thrillers are very successful and they are both based on two different plots, we thought that creating a thriller would be a good idea as they are both very successful films. Also it shows that lots of people went to see thriller, and they are mostly men as 55% male went to see Saw and 78% male went to see Children of Men, so it shows that males are more popular with these films, so we know to target our film at the majority of men. Also it shows from both of these films that the most common ages was between 15-34 so we know also to target our film between this age group.

Ideas for thriller

Questionnaire analysis

We have already decided on the plot of our thriller, but we thought it would be good to have a few people complete a questionnaire we created, this is because it will give us a wider view on what the public like in thriller. Here are the results:

What is your favourite type of thriller?

Horror 2

Crime 0

Terrorism 0

Mystery 3

Supernatural 2

From the first question it shows us that people like mysterious thrillers, this is good because our thriller is based on a mystery, this will help us because we will know what thrillers people like and as the highest result was mystery, we know that people are more likely to watch ours as they will see it is mysterious at the opening.

What thriller opening do you think is best to draw the audience in?

Lots of action 0

Murder 4

Little action 0

Mystery 4

Other 0

From these results it shows that the most two common types of thriller openings best to draw an audience in were murder and a mystery. This is good for our thriller because the opening is a mystery and also similar to a murder because someone gets his by a car in which they could have been killed. This question helps us because we know our viewers are more likely to be drawn into our thriller.

Which thriller opening do you think is the most effective in terms of drawing an audience in?

Seven 6

Panic Room 0

Children of Men 0

28 Days Later 1

Saw 1

From these results it shows that Seven was the most popular for drawing an audience in, this is because it gives of clues as to what the film is about but it doesn’t show to much information. This is good for us because we will know that when filming our thriller to give of different clues as to what it is about but to also leave the viewer wondering what will happen next, this is what makes a viewer to continue watching a film.

This is Seven’s opening credits; this is good because its help us to understand how to film our thriller, and different ideas that we should give in the opening to our thriller.

What do you find builds up suspense in a film?

Lighting 1

Music 4

Sound 1

Setting/ place 2

Camera angles 0

This is important to our thriller because we will know that people find music to help build up suspense within a film, this means that we know to play music at the opening of our thriller because people will be more likely to watch it, the music sets the genre to the film, and once we play the music the viewer will have an idea as to whether they will want to watch our thriller

How much of the plot of a thriller should be revealed in the opening sequence?

A lot 2

Some 4

A little 2

None 0

This will help our thriller because we will know whether people will want us to reveal lots of our thriller in the opening sequence. From the results its shows half of the people we asked said that revealing a little bit of the plot is good because people will get an idea as to whether they will want to watch it or not as they think they will enjoy it.

This is an example of a thriller opening that shows some clues to what the thriller is about, this will help us because we will know how much to reveal in our thriller opening.

How do you think a thriller should open?

Present day 1

Flash-forward 2

Flash-back 1

Everyday life 0

Chase scene 2

A murder/ crime 2

From these results shows us that there was an even amount with three of the options, these are flash-forward, chase scene and murder/ crime scene. In our thriller we will have a premonition (when someone is sleeping and they have a flash-forward that they run someone over) also it will be similar to a murder, because the person will get hurt.

Do you think dialogue is important in a thriller?

Yes 5

No 2

Unsure 1

This is important to our thriller because the majority of people we asked think that dialogue is important to a thriller, so therefore if we add dialogue to the opening scene will we know that lots of people will be interested in watching our thriller, also we will need to make sure that we put our dialogue into lots of detail so that the viewers will understand the plot of the thriller.

Which element is most important in a thriller?

Acting 2

Special effects 4

Costume/ props 0

Setting 2

This is important to the opening of our thriller because if we make sure that we have good acting then it is more likely that people will want to watch out thriller. Also running someone over is a special effect, and this is the main sequence to the opening of our thriller, so by knowing that people like special effects will increase the amount of viewers that we will get.

What do you like most about the thriller genre?

Confusion 2

Suspense 3

Mystery 1

Good vs. evil 2

Compelling characters 0

This is important to the opening of our thriller because we will know that people will want to see confusion within our thriller, this is good because we will have confusion within the opening of our thriller. Also there will be suspense in the opening so it will help increase popularity. This will help us because we know what people like about thrillers, and what they think is good to make it a thriller.

Who is your favourite thriller director?

Martin Scorses 1

Alfred Hitchcock 1

Steven Spielberg 2

David Fincher 2

M. Night Shyamalan 0

Quentin Tarrantino 2

This is important to our thriller opening because we will know what type of thrillers people will like if we know who their favourite director is, this is because we will see the different types of thriller that people produce. There was an even amount between Steven Spielberg, David Fincher, and Quentin Tarrantino. An example of a thriller from one of these director Steven Spielberg is from the film Jaws. This is a thriller from Steven Spielberg that became successful, so if we create a film with similar ideas it is highly likely it will be a successful thriller.
